Are your political views static?
In doing my research for Virginia’s gubernatorial race in November, I ran across the Democratic parties current strategy: A 20 year old Masters Thesis.? In reading part of the thesis, my thoughts were “god, we don’t want this guy in office”, but then I thought about it a little more (I know, that’s expecting a lot from the average voter.? Feel free to send flames about that to IDontGiv@damn.com).? My thoughts were “Gee, how much has my thinking changed over the past 20 years?”? I started out as a devout Democrat, moved to a staunch Republican, and I’m now of the libertarian (small “l”) mindset.? I’m of the opinion that pretty much all politicians are crooks and liars, so it doesn’t really matter what party they run under.? But before you throw a 20 year old thesis in someone’s face, think to yourself “how much have my views changed over the past two decades”)

Interesting. I’m drawn to your comment “pretty much all politicians are crooks and liars”. What if you had enough of others misrepresenting you and ran for an office and won. That would make you a politician… would you then be a crook and liar?
I only bring this up because I agree that most are crooks and liars too. But I’m the type of person that wants to be part of the solution and in this case becoming one of the key people… a politician, may be the only way to make things better. Only I don’t want to become one of the crooks and liars.
Kind of a catch 22.

Eric - I think it depends on the person. I don’t know what intentions most politicians started with, but, from my point of view, almost all of them appear to be corrupted somewhere in the process, or started out that way. I say almost all, as I feel there are a few (Paul, Coburn, Tancredo, maybe Kyl, Shadegg) that do not appear so. Most forget that ours was supposed to be a limited government, allowing the states to govern themselves. It also would appear that unless you allow yourself to become corrupted, you don’t get much done, although after you are corrupted, you are no longer getting done what you set out to do in the first place. How much legislation have those I mentioned successfully passed (of course, NOT creating new legislation would normally be a good thing, but they haven’t passed anything overturning past legislation either, and they have tried)
