Unintended Consequences

Townhall.com :: Columns :: Are you able to obey this law? by John Stossel - Jun 7, 2006

This unintended consequence of the ADA shouldn’t have been a surprise. If you give some workers extra power to sue, those workers become potential “bombs,” and some employers avoid them.Politicians bragged that the ADA “fixed the discrimination problem.” But what really happened is that lawyers got richer, and the disabled got fewer opportunities.

It’s the social engineering shit like this that has been killing this country since the 60’s.  We need to get over the fact that, yes, there are going to be some victims of discrimination out there, and we must realize that we can’t legislate away the people who practice it.

Come to Londonistan, our refuge for poor misunderstood Islamist victims - Comment - Times Online

[…]
The problem lies in a refusal to acknowledge that Islamist extremism is rooted in religion. Instead, ministers and security officials prefer to think of it as a protest movement against grievances such as Iraq or Palestine, or “Islamophobia”. They simply ignore the statements and signs that show unequivocally that the aim is to Islamicise the West.

In large measure, this is the outcome of a profound loss of cultural nerve. The doctrines of multiculturalism and minority rights, themselves the outcome of a systematic onslaught by the British elite against the country’s own identity and values, have paralysed the establishment, which accordingly shies away from criticising any minority for fear of being labelled as bigoted.

As a result, it ignored the radicalisation of many British Muslims by extremist Islamic institutions. Worse still, “grievance culture” has meant that instead of fighting the paranoia and lies driving the Islamist’s hatred of the West, British society is afflicted by the very same pathology.

Minority rights doctrine has produced a moral inversion, in which those doing wrong are excused if they belong to a “victim” group, while those at the receiving end of their behaviour are blamed simply because they belong to the “oppressive” majority.

[…]

I think that we in the U.S, for the most part, suffer from the same pathology. Look at the way we refuse to profile any minorty group, even when there is more than enough cause to do so. I’m not sanctioning racism, but when profiling makes sense, dammit, do it and stop worrying about being called racist. If there is actual racism going on, it will be found out, but we need to stop screaming “racism” constantly, or it will mean nothing. Profiling is not racism, you can profile based on a number of things, sex, height, weight, skin color. We seem to forbid profiling based on about half of those, which is stupid. We also need to stop the glorification of these groups as “victims”, and to stop providing people with the means of sitting on their ass and doing nothing because they are from a “victim” group.

Mises Economics Blog: The Sorrry State of Our Union
George Reisman

Congressmen no longer read the bills they vote on and thus do not require them to make sense. (The latest example is the passage of a bill by the House of Representatives making “price gouging” illegal while leaving it undefined.) They leave it to the President and the Supreme Court to sort things out.

And the hardest question that was left unasked in the article: How do we get from where we are, to where we need to go. How do we make our Congress(wo)men want to get back to small government?

The Egregiously Destructive War on Drugs - Mises Institute

Drug-taking is extremely unhealthy for the persons engaging in it, but not for anybody who abstains from it. The “War on Drugs,” by contrast, harms everybody subject to a government that undertakes it. I have no sympathy for drug addicts; I wish to argue the case of the innocent, moral, productive people who have never used such substances in their lives but are nonetheless harmed by the coercive illegalization of drugs.

When are people going to recognize the truth that the War On Drugs™ has been a complete failure, probably costing more in lives and money than prohibition did back in the 30’s.  We have drug lords and gangs that are worse than the Mafia ever was during prohibition, but no one seems to want to touch the issue, except for the religious right, who want to keep pushing their moral standards on everyone else.

IN THE NEWS

Distillation of Ethanol - In recent days, we have seen several news items on people distilling ethanol at home to supplement their gasoline needs. Unfortunately, some of the reports do not inform the public that it is illegal to distill alcohol without first obtaining a Federal permit through the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). Failure to obtain a Federal permit prior to engaging in this activity is a criminal offence under the Internal Revenue Code.

Federal law provides for the issuance of Alcohol Fuel Plant (AFP) permits for persons who intend to produce, process, store, use or distribute distilled spirits exclusively for fuel use. Persons wishing to distill ethanol for fuel use should contact TTB’s National Revenue Center at 513-684-3334 in order to apply for a permit. There may also be additional permitting requirements and other restrictions on the State and local level.

Media inquiries should be directed to Art Resnick, Director of Media and Public Affairs, at 202-927-8062.

Can you believe this?  Next thing they’re going to make you get a permit to take a crap, as you might put that in a compost and make methanol.  Gimmie a fucking break.
